Roshar's creatures wear their skeletons on the outside.
Carapace is the hard shell that covers a great many of Roshar's creatures, interlocking plates that do the work of both skin and armor. On a chasmfiend it is thick enough and heavy enough to matter, and the smaller animals wear thinner versions of the same thing. Color runs by species, from the deep purple of a legger to the orange plating the Parshendi carry, which looks less like something they put on than something that grew where it sits.
