Bridge Four

Bridge Four is a bridge crew in the army of Highprince Sadeas on the Shattered Plains, central to The Way of Kings. Sadeas's warcamp fights its plateau battles by sending crews of slaves, prisoners, and unwanted men at a run across the plateaus carrying enormous wooden assault bridges, which they drop over the chasms so soldiers and cavalry can charge across. Bridgemen make the approach unarmored, directly under Parshendi bows, and the work kills them in numbers; among all the crews, Bridge Four is a byword for bad luck, with the worst survival record in the camp and a reputation as the place where troublemakers are sent to die. It is to Bridge Four that Kaladin, a branded slave with a habit of surviving, is assigned when he arrives at the Plains.
