In the city of Kilahito, surrounded by an endless darkness called the shroud, a young man who calls himself Painter is one of hundreds of nightmare painters who protect the city. He walks his nightly rounds alone and tells himself he is a lone hunter. In the sunlit kingdom of Torio, Yumi is one of the Chosen, picked at birth and raised to call the spirits. Her days are filled with ritual, and she hopes to visit the big festival in Torio City dressed as an ordinary person, but she does not ask her warden, Liyun.
