The amphitheater is a half circle of stone seats cut into a wide alleyway beside Tashi's Light Orphanage in the immigrant quarter, where elders in shiquas sit and the orphans play.
Urchins are told to come to the orphanage from this alley side, past the stone benches, rather than by the orange street front kept for officials. When the caretaker known as the Stump opens the doors, the children race up and down the steps or toss painted pebbles on the open floor, and she hands out clemabread rolls from a cart. At the back of the seats the same old men and women chat, laugh and pour tea for one another.
