Winterfell
Winterfell is the ancient castle of House Stark and the capital of the North in A Game of Thrones, a double-walled stronghold warmed by hot springs, with a godswood at its heart and the crypts of the Kings in the North below.
Seat of House Stark for thousands of years, Winterfell commands the North from the heart of A Game of Thrones. The castle rises beside the kingsroad near the wolfswood, a sprawling stronghold of double granite walls and dozens of courtyards, its buildings set on unleveled ground so that covered bridges run between towers at odd heights. Hot springs beneath the stones keep its halls warm against the northern cold and feed its glass gardens. At its center lies an ancient godswood where a white heart tree stands over a black pool, kept in the manner of the old gods, and beneath the castle run the crypts where the Kings in the North and the Lords of Winterfell rest in stone. Direwolves out of the nearby forest give House Stark its sigil, and the family words are a warning: Winter is Coming.
