Valyria
Valyria is the ruined capital of the Valyrian Freehold in A Song of Ice and Fire, the empire of the dragonlords destroyed in the cataclysm called the Doom four centuries before A Game of Thrones.
Long before the Seven Kingdoms, the known world belongs to Valyria, and its ruin haunts every book of A Song of Ice and Fire from A Game of Thrones onward. Capital of the Valyrian Freehold, the city rises on a peninsula of Essos where shepherds first find dragons lairing in the volcanic chain called the Fourteen Fires; taming them, the Valyrians build the mightiest empire the world has known, throwing down the old empire of Ghis and spreading their roads, their spells, and their silver-haired bloodlines across two continents. Four centuries before the main series, the Doom descends, and in a cataclysm of fire and ash the heart of the Freehold is destroyed in a single day. The ruins remain, wrapped in the poisoned waters of the Smoking Sea, and Valyrian steel, rarer than gold, is the most tangible thing the empire leaves behind.
