The Riverlands

The Riverlands form the central region of the Seven Kingdoms and are among the principal settings of A Game of Thrones. They are bordered by the North, the Vale of Arryn, the Westerlands, the Reach and the Crownlands, and they take their name from the many waterways crossing them, chief among these the Trident and its tributaries. The land is fertile, scattered with small woods such as the Whispering Wood, and centred on the great lake called the Gods Eye. No settlement here is large enough to be called a city, though Stoney Sept, Fairmarket, Maidenpool and Saltpans are sizeable towns. Once a sovereign kingdom, the region was taken by the stormlords and then by the ironborn, who held it as part of the Kingdom of the Isles and Rivers until Aegon the Conqueror's invasion. House Tully has ruled it from Riverrun for three centuries since.
