Westeros is a continent of walls. Its fortified seats fall into three kinds: cities, of which there are only five, being King's Landing, Oldtown, Lannisport, Gulltown and White Harbour; towns of a few thousand souls gathered under a castle, such as Duskendale and Maidenpool; and strongholds proper, castles that stand alone or above a single village. Every great house holds one and takes its name from it. Winterfell and the Dreadfort stand in the North, Riverrun and Harrenhal on the Trident, the Eyrie on the Giant's Lance, Pyke among the Iron Islands, Casterly Rock above the western sea, Highgarden in the Reach, Storm's End on Shipbreaker Bay, and Sunspear in Dorne.
