The Shadow Lands lie beyond Asshai in the far east, the land Magister Illyrio names as the source of the ancient stone dragon eggs he gives Daenerys and, by the tales she has heard, of the first dragons too.
Ser Jorah tells Daenerys of the ghost grass said to grow there in pale oceans taller than a mounted rider, choking every other grass and lit at night by the souls of the damned. Caravans from the Shadow Lands come to trade at the Eastern Market of Vaes Dothrak, and Ser Jorah guesses that the most misshapen statues on the road into that city came from there as well.
