The Shadow Lands lie at the far eastern edge of the known world, some six thousand miles from Westeros, north and east of the Jade Sea, beyond Yi Ti and above the city of Asshai on the northern shore of the Saffron Straits. They are a country of mountains, hills and great rivers, and of ghost grass, a pale white grass that kills whatever tries to grow beside it. No living city stands there that anyone can name, though maps mark a ruin called Stygai in a valley north and east of Asshai. Traders out of the west rarely go further than Asshai itself and deal with the people of the Shadow through it.
