Red Waste
A vast parched desert in eastern Essos, running eight hundred miles north to south with almost no water but a few wells in ruined cities.
The red waste is a great desert of eastern Essos, named in A Game of Thrones, lying east of Slaver's Bay and Lhazar and south of the Dothraki Sea, with the Bone Mountains to the west and the Summer Sea along its southern edge. It runs some eight hundred miles from north to south and six hundred from east to west, parched and riverless, with no water to be had but a few wells that still hold in the ruins of abandoned cities. Vaes Orvik, Vaes Tolorro, Vaes Shirosi and Vaes Qosar all lie dead near its southern rim, while the living cities of Port Yhos, Qarkash and Qarth stand on the coast below it, fed by trade coming in from the sea and shielded from the Dothraki to the north by the waste itself. It was smaller once and has spread over the years, swallowing settled land and driving its people out for reasons no one has explained.
