The Red Keep is the great castle that looms over King's Landing from Aegon's high hill, with seven huge drum towers and a grim barbican.
Behind its curtain walls stand barracks and granaries, dungeons, vaulted halls and roofed bridges. In Ned Stark's memory of the war, King Aerys holds it with several thousand loyalists as the remnants of Rhaegar's army flee back to the city. Catelyn Stark reaches it after dark under an escort of gold cloaks, to find the portcullis lowered and the gates shut for the night while lights flicker in its windows.
