Randyll Tarly is the lord of Horn Hill, and Jon Snow judges that even a lord who brought a dozen masters-at-arms to his castle could not turn Sam into a fighter.
Randyll Tarly is a bannerman of the Tyrells of Highgarden, and his line keeps Heartsbane, a Valyrian steel greatsword handed from father to son for nearly five hundred years. His eldest son Samwell tells of a boyhood of harsh efforts to make him martial, of a father whose disappointment hardens into loathing, and of being set aside once a fiercer younger brother is born.
