Lord Randyll Tarly is the head of House Tarly and the Lord of Horn Hill in the Reach, and he is spoken of in A Game of Thrones. He is reckoned among the finest soldiers in Westeros, a fearsome and decisive commander, and during Robert's Rebellion he beat Robert Baratheon at Ashford. He is also a hard and pitiless man, cruel to his eldest son Samwell his whole life long, and he answers offences with punishments as sadistic as they are neatly matched to the crime. Pride governs him, and he has set his hopes on his younger son Dickon as the heir to Horn Hill.
