Pate is a novice of the Citadel in Oldtown. Born to smallfolk in the Westerlands, he came to the Citadel at thirteen and has spent five years there without forging a single link of a maester's chain, having failed to satisfy Archmaester Vaellyn on the heavens and Archmaester Ebrose on healing. He waits on the senile Archmaester Walgrave, who has charge of the Ravenry, dressing him and fetching his meals. He shares a name with Spotted Pate the pig boy of the old tales, which he dislikes, and he is much taken with Rosey, a serving girl at the Quill and Tankard.
