Moat Cailin is an ancient stronghold of the North, raised by the First Men roughly ten thousand years ago to guard the Neck, and it is the gateway between the North and the lands south of it. It commands the causeway, the only mapped road through the bogs, and is held never to have been taken from the south. It once had a score of towers and a great wall nearly the equal of Winterfell's, and the kings of the North made it their last line of defence when the Andals came.
