Maesters are healers who carry the title Maester before their own names, and one of them serves in Ned's household.
Maester Aemon cut away Gared's ears after the cold took them, leaving scarred holes behind. In a letter from King Robert, Maester Pycelle is named as the one who brought the milk of the poppy to ease a sick lord's pain.
Ned says Maester Luwin would tell anyone the Others never lived at all, and Jon quotes Luwin as holding that bastards grow up faster than the rest. When news must travel, Ned asks Luwin to send his swiftest bird.
