Maegor I Targaryen, Maegor the Cruel of Fire and Blood, is the third king on the Iron Throne, the Conqueror's son by Queen Visenya, a merciless warrior whose reign of steel and fire is remembered as tyranny.
The name of Maegor the Cruel survives into A Game of Thrones in the stones of Maegor's Holdfast, the innermost keep of the Red Keep, and his reign is chronicled in Fire and Blood, the history of House Targaryen. Third king to sit the Iron Throne, Maegor is the only son of Aegon the Conqueror by his sister-wife Visenya: a huge, grim, merciless warrior, knighted at sixteen, the youngest knight in the realm at the time, who bears the Valyrian blade Dark Sister and in time claims his father's dragon, Balerion the Black Dread. He is no diplomat, answering every defiance with steel and fire, and his years on the throne are consumed by war with the Faith Militant. The realm remembers his reign as a byword for cruelty, and his epithet has never needed explaining.
