Maegor I Targaryen, remembered as Maegor the Cruel, is a son of Aegon the Conqueror by Visenya who sees the Red Keep finished and then takes the heads of everyone who built it.
He follows his half-brother Aenys onto the Iron Throne, the third king of his line, and he vows that none but those of dragon blood shall learn the hidden ways of the great castle. The royal apartments lie in a fortress at its heart that bears his name, Maegor's Holdfast, guarded by massive walls and a spiked, waterless ditch.
