Known world

The world has no name of its own. The people who live in it simply call it the world, and it runs for thousands upon thousands of miles, the greater part of that ocean. Four continents are known. Westeros lies long and thin in the far west, some three thousand miles from the Wall down to the Summer Sea, most of it held as a single realm under the king in King's Landing. Essos sits across the narrow sea, several times larger and far less orderly, a patchwork of city states and a handful of kingdoms. Sothoryos is hot jungle and burning desert to the south. Ulthos, further east still, is a name and very little else.
