The Kingsguard are seven knights sworn to protect the king of Westeros, his family and his guests. A white cloak is given for life. A brother of the Kingsguard holds no lands, takes no wife and fathers no children, and he serves whichever king sits the Iron Throne, without regard for the house he was born to. The seven wear white enamelled scale with silver fastenings, and only they may carry a shield of unmarked white. Command falls to a Lord Commander, who keeps the White Book in the White Sword Tower, where every brother is given a single page for his name, his arms and whatever deeds are thought worth the ink.
