Jon Arryn is Lord of the Eyrie and Warden of the East, foster father to both Eddard Stark and Robert Baratheon and King Robert's Hand, whose great office Robert asks Ned to fill as A Game of Thrones begins.
For as long as King Robert has reigned, Jon Arryn has stood beside him, and A Game of Thrones, opens in the long shadow of his service. Lord of the Eyrie and Warden of the East, head of one of the oldest great houses of Westeros, Jon Arryn fosters two boys at his mountain seat in the years before the rebellion: Eddard Stark and Robert Baratheon. He is a second father to both, and when the realm rises against the Mad King it is Jon Arryn who raises his banners for his wards rather than give them up. After the war he serves Robert as Hand of the King, first among his councillors, and weds Lysa of House Tully, who gives him a son. It is his office, Hand of the King, that Robert rides north to ask Eddard Stark to fill.
