Jeor Mormont
Jeor Mormont, the Old Bear, is the 997th Lord Commander of the Night's Watch in A Game of Thrones, a onetime Lord of Bear Island who takes the black and commands the thinning Watch from Castle Black.
Command of the Night's Watch belongs, in A Game of Thrones, to Jeor Mormont, called the Old Bear, 997th Lord Commander of the order that mans the Wall. Once Lord of Bear Island and head of House Mormont, sworn to Winterfell, he gives up his seat to his son and takes the black, choosing the hardest service in the Seven Kingdoms when his years had earned him a warm hall. From Castle Black he commands a Watch shrunk far below its old strength, with most of its nineteen castles standing empty along the ice. He is broad, grey-bearded, and gruff, keeps a raven that begs for corn and echoes his words, and takes a sharp interest in the recruits who come north, for no one knows better than the Old Bear how badly the Watch needs men.
