Hoster Tully is Lord of Riverrun and Lord Paramount of the Trident in A Game of Thrones, father of Catelyn Stark, Lysa Arryn, and Edmure Tully, a proud riverlord whose marriages tie House Tully to Winterfell and the Eyrie.
The riverlords of the Trident owe their banners to Riverrun, and to Hoster Tully, who rules there as A Game of Thrones, begins. Lord of Riverrun and Lord Paramount of the Trident, Hoster stands at the head of House Tully, whose words are Family, Duty, Honor. His children bind his house to half the realm: Catelyn, the eldest, weds Lord Eddard Stark of Winterfell; Lysa weds Jon Arryn, Lord of the Eyrie; his son Edmure stands heir to Riverrun. His younger brother is Ser Brynden, the knight called the Blackfish, with whom he has quarreled for years over Brynden's refusal to wed. In Robert's Rebellion Hoster raises the riverlands for Robert's cause, and in his own hall he is known as proud, shrewd, and devoted above all to the advancement of his house. As a boy, Petyr Baelish is fostered at Riverrun beside Hoster's own children.
