Harren the Black, last of the ironborn kings to rule the Trident, spends forty years building a seat meant to dwarf every other in the realm, and finishes it on the very day Aegon the Conqueror lands in Westeros. Dragonflame does what no siege engine could: Balerion the Black Dread burns the great towers, melting stone into the twisted shapes they hold to this day, and the castle passes to new hands. Its five towers and cavernous halls are built at a scale no household can fill, smallfolk say the place is cursed, and it is true that no house granted it has held it long. As A Game of Thrones opens, Harrenhal belongs to House Whent.
