The last Hoare king of the Isles and the Rivers, an old and famously cruel man who spent forty years and the wealth of two kingdoms raising Harrenhal beside the Gods Eye and named it for himself.
Harren Hoare, called Harren the Black, was the last of three Hoare kings to rule as King of the Isles and the Rivers, holding the ironborn and the riverlands together by force. His grandfather Harwyn had taken the Trident from the storm kings, and his father Halleck ruled it from a modest tower at Fairmarket. Harren wanted something else. He spent forty years raising Harrenhal beside the Gods Eye, the largest castle ever built in Westeros, five great towers high and named for himself, and paid for it with the wealth of two kingdoms and the lives of the men chained to its sledges. He was old and grey before it was done.
