Grey King
The first king of the Iron Islands in ironborn myth, grey of hair, beard and eye, who they say won fire from the Storm God, taught them nets and sails, carved the first longship and wed a mermaid.
The Grey King ruled the Iron Islands in the dawn of days, or so the ironborn say, and he takes his name from his hair, his beard and his eyes, which were grey as the winter sea. He is said to have worn robes of woven seaweed and a crown of driftwood, given him by the sea to show whose power he held. The stories credit him with fire, which he won by taunting the Storm God into throwing a thunderbolt at a tree, and with teaching his people to weave nets and sails, and with carving the first longship out of Ygg, a pale tree that fed on the flesh of men. He took a mermaid to wife so that his children might live on land and in water both.
