The Free Cities are the nine cities across the narrow sea from Westeros, among them Pentos, a city of magisters where the last Targaryens shelter in exile.
Across the narrow sea from Westeros lie the nine Free Cities, the independent city-states of western Essos. Most are daughters of old Valyria. They are places of merchant princes, sellsword companies, temples, and trade fleets, forever quarreling over waters and borders, with Myr and Lys contesting the Disputed Lands between them. It is in the Free Cities that the exiled heirs of House Targaryen wait.
