The Free Cities are the nine independent city-states of western Essos across the narrow sea from Westeros, old daughters of Valyria and the setting of the earliest eastern chapters of A Game of Thrones.
Across the narrow sea from Westeros lie the nine Free Cities, the independent city-states of western Essos. Braavos, Pentos, Tyrosh, Myr, Lys, Lorath, and Volantis face the sea, while Norvos and Qohor stand inland; each rules the towns and lands around it, and no king commands them all. Most are daughters of old Valyria, planted as colonies in the centuries of the Freehold's power and left to their own devices after the Doom. They are places of merchant princes, sellsword companies, temples, and trade fleets, forever quarreling over waters and borders, with Myr and Lys contesting the Disputed Lands between them. It is in the Free Cities that the exiled heirs of House Targaryen wait.
