The Fourteen Fires, also called the Fourteen Flames, are a chain of volcanoes running across the neck of the Valyrian peninsula, dividing the heartland of the old Freehold to the south from the Lands of the Long Summer to the north. A Valyrian road crossed them, so there was at least one pass a man could use. The dragonlords lodged their dragons in those mountains and worked slaves in mines beneath them for gold and gems, in tunnels where firewyrms lived in the rock. Four hundred years ago the Fourteen Fires erupted together, and what followed is known to history as the Doom of Valyria.
