Eddard Stark
Eddard Stark, Lord of Winterfell, is the Warden of the North, a solemn man who holds that whoever passes a sentence of death should swing the sword himself.
His wife calls him Ned. After he takes a man's life he seeks out the godswood, and this night she finds him there beneath the heart tree, cleaning the Valyrian greatsword Ice in its black pool. She keeps the Faith, but his own gods are the old, nameless gods of the greenwood. He puts no faith in signs, and he lets his children keep the direwolf pups found in the snow. In their youth he and Robert Baratheon fostered together at the Eyrie, and word has come that Robert, the king, is riding to see him.
