Duncan the Tall
Ser Duncan the Tall is the hedge knight hero of The Hedge Knight, the first Tales of Dunk and Egg novella, a towering orphan of Flea Bottom who rides to the tourney at Ashford Meadow with a bald boy called Egg as his squire.
The Hedge Knight, first of the Tales of Dunk and Egg and set nearly ninety years before A Game of Thrones, follows Dunk, an orphan out of Flea Bottom in King's Landing who has spent a dozen years as squire to an old hedge knight, Ser Arlan of Pennytree, riding the roads of the Seven Kingdoms. Setting out on his own for the great tourney at Ashford Meadow, with Ser Arlan's sword, shield, and old warhorse, Dunk means to try his fortune among the champions, if only for a single hour. He stands an inch shy of seven feet, a brawler rather than a schooled swordsman, humble, stubborn, and braver on another's behalf than his own good sense allows. On the road he acquires an unlikely squire, a sharp-tongued bald stableboy who gives his name as Egg, and takes for himself a knight's name to grow into: Ser Duncan the Tall.
