Dragonstone is an island fortress at the mouth of Blackwater Bay, the old Valyrian outpost of House Targaryen and, in A Game of Thrones, the seat of Stannis Baratheon, the king's brother.

The castle is far older than the realm it watches. Lords of old Valyria raised it as their westernmost outpost, and House Targaryen held it for a century before the Doom destroyed their homeland; from this rock Aegon the Conqueror sets out to unite the Seven Kingdoms. Through the centuries of Targaryen rule the island is the traditional seat of the heir to the Iron Throne, the Prince of Dragonstone. After Robert Baratheon's rebellion ends that dynasty, the king grants the island to Stannis, and the lords of Blackwater Bay are sworn to it.
