Daemon Blackfyre is one of the Great Bastards of Aegon the Unworthy, a rebel of old who rises against his trueborn half-brother for the crown and whom Stannis names among the realm's great traitors.
His followers call him the Black Dragon, and Ser Barristan Selmy thinks of him as a man whose love for the first Daenerys drove him to rebel when he could not have her. His rising breaks on the Redgrass Field. The exiles who refuse to kneel, his younger sons among them, flee across the narrow sea, where Bittersteel binds them together as the Golden Company.
