Corlys Velaryon, called the Sea Snake, was Lord of House Velaryon and Master of Driftmark, and Fire and Blood records his voyages and his part in the Dance of the Dragons. He sailed farther than any Westerosi before him, the first to reach Nefer in N'Ghai and the first to navigate the Thousand Islands, and he brought home eastern treasures that he kept at his seat of High Tide. He was the husband of Princess Rhaenys Targaryen. When the realm divided between Rhaenyra Targaryen and her half-brother Aegon II, Corlys was the greatest lord to declare for Rhaenyra and sat upon her black council; more than half her army was sworn to House Velaryon, and his fleets gave her side command of the sea. He closed the Gullet with his ships, stopping trade into and out of Blackwater Bay, and in 129 AC he was named Hand of the Queen.
