Casterly Rock is the stronghold of House Lannister, carved into a great stone above Lannisport and the Sunset Sea.
The wealth of House Lannister flows from Casterly Rock, the fortress carved into a colossal stone above the Sunset Sea, a seat that stands behind much of A Game of Thrones. The Rock overlooks the harbor city of Lannisport and sits atop the gold mines that make the Lannisters the richest house in the Seven Kingdoms. In legend the seat belongs first to the Casterlys, until Lann the Clever, a trickster of the Age of Heroes, winkles it from them by wits alone; his golden-haired descendants rule as Kings of the Rock for thousands of years. When the dragons of Aegon the Conqueror break the last king's host on the Field of Fire, the Lannisters bend the knee and keep their seat as Wardens of the West. Its lord in the present day is Tywin Lannister, father of Queen Cersei.
