Casterly Rock is the stronghold of the Lannisters, the family of the queen, and the place where Lord Tywin Lannister keeps his seat.
Across the narrow sea, Casterly Rock is only a name to Daenerys, one of the far places her brother Viserys speaks of along with the Eyrie, Highgarden and Dorne.
King Robert had hoped to send the young Robert Arryn there to be fostered, but the boy's mother carried him off to the Eyrie in the dead of night instead. Its lord had never taken a ward before. Ned would trust a pit viper with a child before he would trust the lord of the Rock, though he keeps that to himself. The house came late to Robert's cause in the rebellion, joining only when victory was all but sure, and Ned has never forgiven it.
