Bran Stark is seven years old, second son of Lord Eddard and Lady Catelyn of Winterfell. Bran is the castle's climber. He knows its rooftops, gargoyles, and broken towers better than anyone alive, and his mother swears he could climb before he could walk. He dreams of being a knight of the Kingsguard and of seeing the great tourneys of the south. The Stark children find a litter of direwolf pups in the late summer snows, the sigil of their house made flesh, and Bran raises one of them as his own.
