Arya Stark is the younger daughter of Eddard Stark in A Game of Thrones, a nine-year-old who prefers swords to needlework, keeps a blade called Needle from her half-brother Jon, and rides south with her father.
Arya Stark is nine years old at the start of A Game of Thrones, and a trial to her septa, for the younger daughter of Winterfell prefers horses, mud, and swordplay to needlework and courtesy. She takes after her father's people, long-faced and dark-haired, forever compared to her elegant sister Sansa and forever coming up short. Her closest ally is her half-brother Jon Snow, who understands her better than anyone and has a slim sword made for her as a parting gift, a blade she names Needle. Her direwolf she calls Nymeria, after a warrior queen of old. When her father goes south to serve as Hand of the King, Arya rides with him to King's Landing, Needle hidden among her things.
