Alyn is a young guardsman of Winterfell in A Game of Thrones, one of Eddard Stark's household men who rides south to King's Landing, tilts in the Hand's tourney, and dreams of earning his knighthood.
Among the guardsmen of Winterfell who ride south in A Game of Thrones, is Alyn, a young soldier of Lord Eddard Stark's household. He is one of the picked men who accompany the new Hand of the King to King's Landing, standing guard at the Tower of the Hand, waking his lord when the king summons him to ride, and carrying out the small, constant duties that keep a great household running in a strange city. Around that household it is said that Alyn dreams of knighthood, and Sansa Stark privately accounts him one of the handsomer men of her father's guard. At the great tourney held in the Hand's honor, Alyn tilts for Winterfell alongside his fellow northmen, and when Lord Eddard needs a steady man to lead a detachment of his guards, it is Alyn he names.
