Ser Alliser Thorne is an anointed knight of House Thorne, a sworn brother of the Night's Watch and the master-at-arms of Castle Black. A knight of the Crownlands, he served House Targaryen and fought for them in Robert's Rebellion; after the Sack of King's Landing, Lord Tywin Lannister offered him the choice of the block or the black, and he took the black. He is in his fifties, slim and sinewy, with black eyes, black hair streaked with grey, a thin smile and a cold, cutting voice. Bitter, humourless and mean-spirited, he trains the recruits with deliberate contempt, singling out for mockery any man he judges weak or low-born, and most of those who pass through his yard come to hate him.
