The Age of Heroes takes its name from the great men and women who lived in the years of peace that followed the forging of the Pact. A hundred kingdoms rose and fell across Westeros in that span, and much of the tradition and culture of the Seven Kingdoms rests on it: the laws of hospitality, the raising of the Wall, and in the North, where the ways of the First Men run deepest, the rule that the man who passes sentence must swing the sword. A great many noble houses trace their family histories back into it, and a great many songs and tales are set there.
