The mercenary is a woman.
The mercenary buys Feyre's wolf pelt and doe hide at the market, paying an inflated price for them. The overpayment is deliberate, repayment for a past kindness. Nesta and Elain are also at the market that day.
Beyond the purchase, the mercenary passes on what she knows about dangerous faeries crossing the wall. Among the creatures the mercenary describes are the martax and a poisonous one, and her warnings are not secondhand. She bears twisted black scars from a faerie bite, and she shows them.
